Vertical sections of holotype of Labechia carbonaria. a As described by Smith (1932) the specimen is a domed structure and was cut vertically approximately through its centre, revealing the long thick pillars and growth layering. Pillars form a fan-shaped arrangement because the fossil had a curved surface as it grew; pillars are maintained normal to the growth surface. The yellow box in a is enlarged in Fig. 5a; b A second vertical cut at right angles to a, in which the pillars were cut obliquely, and growth layers are also visible. The large arrow indicates that b was photographed from the right-hand side of a, where the plane of b is normal to the viewer.
